Baccarat is one of the most popular live casino games among players in Malaysia, and it's also one of the simplest. You don't play the cards yourself, and you don't need to remember any strategy charts. You make one decision each round, and the dealer does the rest.
The goal of the game
Two hands are dealt: one called Player and one called Banker. Despite the names, you aren't the player and the casino isn't the banker. They're just two hands. You bet on which hand will finish with a total closer to 9, or on the two hands tying.
Card values
- Ace counts as 1.
- 2 to 9 count at face value.
- 10, Jack, Queen and King count as 0.
Only the last digit of a total counts. A 7 and an 8 make 15, which scores 5. A 9 and a King make 9, the best possible score. A hand can never go "bust" the way it can in blackjack.
How a round plays out
- Bets open. A countdown timer runs while players place chips on Player, Banker, Tie or side bets.
- Two cards each. The dealer deals two cards to Player and two to Banker.
- Check for a natural. If either hand totals 8 or 9, that's a "natural". Both hands stand and the round is settled.
- Third cards, if needed. Otherwise, fixed drawing rules decide whether each hand takes one more card.
- Settlement. The hand closer to 9 wins, and bets are paid or collected.
The drawing rules, simplified
You never make drawing decisions yourself, but knowing the basics helps you follow the action.
- Player draws a third card on a total of 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7.
- Banker follows a slightly more complex table that depends on Banker's own total and on the card Player drew, if any. For example, Banker usually draws on 0 to 2 and stands on 7.
The dealer, or the game software on automated tables, applies these rules automatically every time.
The three main bets
- Player: usually pays 1 to 1. Bet RM10 and a win returns RM20, including your stake.
- Banker: usually pays 1 to 1 minus a 5% commission, because the Banker hand wins slightly more often. Bet RM10 and a win returns RM19.50. On "no-commission" tables, Banker pays 1 to 1 but a Banker win with a total of 6 typically pays only half.
- Tie: often pays 8 to 1. On most tables, if the round ties, Player and Banker bets are returned rather than lost.
These figures are the most common, but payouts vary between studios and tables. The paytable shown on the table you're playing is the one that applies.
Why Tie is tempting, and why to be careful
The Tie bet's big payout looks attractive, but ties don't happen often, and the bet carries a much higher house edge than Player or Banker. Many experienced players skip it entirely, or treat it as an occasional small side bet rather than a main one.
Side bets
Many tables offer extra bets such as Player Pair and Banker Pair, which win if the first two cards of that hand are a pair. They pay more than the main bets but win much less often. If you're new to the game, it's worth playing a few shoes with main bets only before you try them.
What are the "roads"?
Live baccarat tables display scoreboards, often called roads. The Bead Plate shows each result in order, and the Big Road groups runs of wins by the same side into columns. Some players enjoy following these patterns, but they only record what has already happened. Past results don't tell you what the next hand will be.
Live table etiquette
- Bet within the timer. When the countdown ends, bets close. Place your chips early if your connection is slow.
- Be polite in chat. A quick greeting is welcome. Dealers can't change results, so arguing about a hand achieves nothing.
- No spam or selling. Don't post links, promote services or ask other players for money in the chat.
- Know the limits. Check the table's minimum and maximum bets before you sit down, and choose a table that suits your budget.
- Use a stable connection. If your stream drops, the round still finishes at the table. Check your bet history for the result once you're back.
Simple habits for new players
- Pick a table where your usual stake is close to the minimum bet, so a short losing run doesn't end your session.
- Set a budget and a time limit before you join the table.
- Avoid doubling your bet after every loss. Progressions like this can drain a budget quickly.
- Take breaks between shoes. Baccarat rounds are fast, and time passes quickly.
